Steve Caldwell is a contemporary artist working predominantly in portraiture and figurative painting. He was an exhibitor in the prestigious BP Portrait Awards in both 2014 and 2015 and has exhibited regularly with The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition and with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. He is also a double prize winner in the RBSA Portrait Prize.
Using his training as a medical artist, Caldwell paints meticulous and intimate works using detail and texture to reinforce the identity and reality of the sitter. Caldwell's work is influenced by a love of the paintings of Degas, Andrew Wyeth, John Singer Sargent and Chuck Close. He creates decidedly contemporary paintings which affectionately acknowledge the history of classical portraiture.
